Embu-Guaçu, a municipality located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, has an interesting history and is full of curiosities. Let's explore some aspects: Origin of the name: The term "Embu-Guaçu" comes from the ancient Tupi language and means "big snake". Initially, the region was called Ilha de Itararé, due to the number of rivers that gave the impression of a large river island. Later, the name changed to M'Boy-Guaçu, also of Tupi origin, before becoming Embu-Guaçu. Colonization and growth: At the end of the 19th century, the backwoods couple José Pires de Albuquerque and Emília Pires de Moraes Pedroso arrived in the region. Impressed by the natural beauty, they decided to settle and built the first house near the Santa Rita River. The town grew with the arrival of immigrants and new families, such as the Roschel, Creim, Schunck and Domingues. In 1920, José Pires de Albuquerque built the first cassava flour factory. Railway development: The region experienced slow growth until the arrival of the Sorocabana Railroad tracks in 1929. The railroad transported coffee from the interior of São Paulo to the port of Santos. The Embu-Guaçu railway station was inaugurated in 1934. Political Emancipation: On March 28, 1965, Embu-Guaçu was elevated to the category of municipality. The first mayor was José Simões Louro Junior. Today, Embu-Guaçu is an important municipality, with 100% of its area in a region of springs that supply the Greater São Paulo area.
